CMS Hasche Sigle advises Computerbild in court proceedings against Internet subscription scammers

03/08/2009

Hamburg – Computerbild magazine and German consumer association "Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband e.V." have joined forces to stop the rapid expansion of Internet scams. Their particular concern are situations where Internet users accept what seems to be a free offer and provide their name and address in good faith, only to find that they have unwittingly taken out a subscription or entered into another form of billable contract. As part of an "Alliance against Internet Scams", Computerbild is taking legal action against two such scammers in order to send out a clear message. In a third case, the site operator has already backed down and dropped claims it previously sought to enforce.

A team from CMS Hasche Sigle led by Dr Sebastian Cording is representing two scam victims on behalf of Computerbild in court action against two online providers.

"The age of information and communication continues to generate new content and create new opportunities at national and international level," comments Dr Sebastian Cording. "The number and nature of the challenges are evolving at ever greater speed. By conducting cases of this type we are helping to boost consumer protection for Internet users. At the same time, changes in legislation to combat cases like this are highly desirable. Here too, CMS Hasche Sigle is eager to make a contribution."
