19/11/2010

Berlin – Jan Wölper, partner at CMS Hasche Sigle, is the new chairman of the German Maritime Arbitration Association. The GMAA is the most prominent German association of arbitrators for settling maritime disputes. Established in 1983, the GMAA is gaining increasing international significance in the fiercely contested market for maritime arbitration.

Jan Wölper was born in Bremen in 1958 and studied law in Hamburg, Kiel and Surrey (UK). After several years focusing on shipping with law firms in London, Oslo and Bangkok, he has been a lawyer in Hamburg since 1989.

His work as a lawyer has always centred on maritime law, including associated arbitration proceedings relating primarily to shipbuilding, charter parties, transport contracts and insurance law.

Wölper has served as a deputy chairman of the GMAA since 2004.
