CMS advises long-established Stuttgart-based bookseller Wittwer on joining forces with Thalia

10/07/2018

Stuttgart – Book retailer Wittwer has set a course for the future by joining forces with Thalia. Best known for its flagship store on Stuttgart’s Schloßplatz, Wittwer celebrated its 150th anniversary last year. Partnering with a major industry player provides Wittwer with new opportunities for responding to changes in media behaviour and to the demands of digitisation. The transaction is currently awaiting approval from Germany’s Federal Cartel Office. The parties agreed not to disclose details of the deal.

A CMS team headed by lead partner Dr Regine Hagen-Eck advised Wittwer on all the legal aspects of the transaction with Thalia.

Wittwer is a major German bookseller with a long heritage. Thalia has almost 300 outlets and is the market-leading book retailer in the German-speaking countries, but does not currently have a presence in Stuttgart. Thalia will retain the existing Wittwer bookstores and operate them under the new name Wittwer-Thalia.
