05/02/2015

CMS is pleased to announce the addition of partner Pieter Bekker to the firm's International Arbitration practice. He also has significant expertise in the energy sector and brings with him a number of strong client relationships.

A member of the New York Bar and native of The Netherlands, Bekker expands the firm's multi-lingual, multi-jurisdictional capabilities in advising corporations, investors, and states in connection with international disputes, especially those in the energy sector. For 23 years, Pieter has drawn on his triple training in Civil law, Common law and public international law to deal with complex international matters, especially arbitrations arising from cross-border investments and projects and high-profile matters before international courts and tribunals.

CMS’ International Arbitration partner, Guy Pendell, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Pieter as the latest addition to our international arbitration team. Pieter brings valuable expertise, in particular in investment treaty arbitration and public international law.”

Senior Partner and Head of Energy, Penelope Warne, added: “I have had the privilege of working with Pieter at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) in Dundee. His energy expertise fits exceptionally well with our own strength in this sector.”

Commenting on his appointment, Bekker, said: "CMS has built a first-class International Arbitration Group that has captured the attention of clients and peers internationally. The firm is synonymous with the energy sector and my orientation toward energy matters fits neatly with the firm’s experience. I am excited to join a firm so highly regarded for its industry sector focus and commitment to client service."

In addition to his client work, Bekker teaches international investment law and arbitration as Professor and Chair in International Law at the internationally renowned Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy within the University of Dundee in Scotland.
