Taking Stock - the outlook for Consumer Retail 2018

This CMS report, in partnership with Retail Economics, looks at the outlook for the Consumer & Retail sector in the current macroeconomic climate. Exciting opportunities sit in stark contrast to big challenges. In the report we outline how pressures on household spending are unlikely to abate any time soon. We also look at Brexit and estimate some of the likely impacts, both commercial and legal, of a new relationship with the EU.

As if uncertainty around the future relationship with the EU weren’t enough, the report also looks at the nature of the UK’s relationship with its second largest trading partner, the US, as Donald Trump’s administration enters head-on into a trade war, with many consumer goods from cranberries to bourbon whiskey placed squarely in the firing line. Lastly, the report looks at the structural changes occurring across the sector – from demographics to technology - and we provide our own guide to dealing with disruption.
