Cornelius joined CMS Germany in 1983 (formerly Hasche Albrecht Fischer), became a partner in 1986 and was Managing Partner of the Hamburg office from 1996 to 1999. From 1999 to 2011, Cornelius was Managing Partner of CMS Germany and in this position, he initiated and negotiated mergers with various regional German law firms. During this period, he was responsible for consolidating these regional offices into a single national law firm and for integrating CMS Germany into the international CMS organisation. In his capacity as Managing Partner of CMS Germany, Cornelius was one of the key initiators and co-founders of CMS in June 1999 and was responsible for the creation of the founding agreement. He has been a member of the CMS Executive Committee since its inception in 1999 and its Chairman from 2008. During his time as Chairman, Cornelius has managed various mergers and the integration of individual offices into one law firm as part of the CMS organisation which currently has 60 offices in 34 countries and more than 3,000 lawyers worldwide.

As Chairman, Cornelius is responsible for the strategic direction of CMS and has presided over its rapid growth into a top 10 international law firm. Since he took office in 2008, revenues have increased by over 30% and CMS has expanded into the Middle East (Dubai and Oman) and into Russia, Portugal and Turkey. During his term, he has been the recipient of numerous awards for law firm management.

Alongside his CMS Executive Chairman role, he holds several positions with public and private institutions and is, among others, advisory board member of a large German bank, chief representative of a large downstream oil company, member of the Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein board of trustees of the Stifterverband (German organisation promoting education, science and innovation) and member of the German board of trustees of the WWF.
