James Grimwood is Head of the CMS Private Equity Group.

James has extensive experience in advising on a wide range of corporate work, including M&A, joint ventures and corporate reorganisations. As Head of the Private Equity group, James has experience in acting on private equity transactions of all types and sizes, for institutions and management teams, and both domestically and cross border. 

James is described by Legal 500 as “very commercial” and “understands market trends”. Chambers describes James as standing out for his “commercial awareness, sector knowledge, attention to detail, quality of output and project management”.

In addition, James has a wealth of experience in handling corporate transactions in the energy sector, having acted on many large and high profile transactions, both for corporates and financial institutional alike, across many different jurisdictions.

  • Risk Capital Partners on a number of transactions including most recently on the buy out of cruise.co, and on the MBO of Neilson from Thomas Cook plc.
  • Mayfair Equity Partners on a range of investments including Ovo and Hotels and More.
  • Advising the shareholders, both institutional and management, of Nature Delivered (Graze) on its sale to Carlyle Private Equity
  • RBS on a number of corporate transactions, including the $660m sale of Partnerships in Care Group to Arcadia Healthcare and the sale of Aqualisa to LDC and management.
  • Deutsche Bank AG on debt and equity restructurings and subsequent disposals, including the sale of Teesside Gas Processing Plant to Arclight Capital Partners.
  • A number of family office investors on a range of transactions, including the buyout, and subsequent disposal to KKR, of OEG Offshore.
  • BG Group on the sale of its interest in CATS (Central Area Transmission System) to Antin Infrastructure Partners for £562m.
