Mexico received an energy boost with structural and legal reforms that started in late 2013, putting an end to state monopolies in the oil, gas, and power industries. Two years after its implementation, the Energy Reform has resulted in a new paradigm for business ventures and long-term projects, positioning Mexico as one of the best places in Latin America to invest. Oil & gas exploration and development are providing significant drivers to economic growth; private equity investment is reaching record levels, which has had a significant impact on infrastructure and related investments.

CMS has had a presence in Mexico since 2013 through Woodhouse Lorente Ludlow, S.C. (WLL). One of WLL’s founding partners, Derek Woodhouse, was a senior associate at CMS London from 2001 to 2006 and before that worked for the Mexican Energy Ministry and the Energy Regulatory Commission for 8 years. WLL and CMS London are currently jointly advising the Mexican Federal Government on the implementation of the wholesale electricity market and the restructuring of the Federal Electricity Commission (CRE).
