CMS and the Shanghai World Expo 2010

03/05/2010

The World Expo 2010 is held in Shanghai from 1 May to 31 October under the theme of 'Better City, Better Life'.

The Netherlands is taking a high profile at this World Expo and is pulling all the stops out to focus the eyes of the world on its major conurbations, its provinces and business sectors.

CMS works together with the Province and City of Utrecht
The Province and City of Utrecht have pooled their resources and have put together a joint business Holland-China programme running from 23 to 30 May in the VIP lounge of the 'Happy Street' Holland Pavilion.

Forecasters expect 55% of the world's population to live in cities in 2010. The organization of the World Expo challenges visitors to come up with ideas for liveable cities in the 21st century. Although the Chinese authorities have set this as a priority for themselves and for private industry, sustainability still has far to go in China. The challenge is to ensure intelligent use of sustainable technology to ensure that Chinese cities stay liveable. With its high level of urbanization and high population density, the Netherlands has a wealth of experience to offer. The programme developed by the Province and City of Utrecht examines sustainability, environmentally friendly technologies and socially responsible construction and building practices.

CMS Derks Star Busmann has a long record of expertise in these areas and, thanks to its China Desk located in Shanghai, in Dutch-Chinese trading relations. That is why the Province and City of Utrecht were pleased to work with CMS during this world fair.

Joint activities
Below is a list of the activities to which CMS is contributing actively in the context of the joint Province and City of Utrecht programme.

  • Inaugural meeting: prior to leaving for the World Expo 2010 an inaugural meeting was held in Utrecht for all participants. Both the Shanghai and Utrecht CMS offices were involved.
  • Major contribution to the Sustainable Building programme: in the course of the event Frank Leyendeckers (CMS Utrecht) and George Ji (CMS Shanghai) will make a substantial contribution to the 'Government Influence on Urban Planning' seminar to be held on 28 May in the Holland Pavilion's VIP Lounge in Shanghai.
  • Presentation of the 'Holland Knowledge Inc. Award': CMS is one of the organizations that facilitated this award that distinguishes the most innovative Sino-Dutch project. Jurjen Groot will be a member of the jury.
