CMS Poland appoints nine-strong team to banking and finance practice

14 May 2018

CMS Poland is developing its banking and finance practice, with the appointment of nine experienced lawyers, including a partner and three counsels, from international law firm Dentons.

The banking and finance team will be led by Michał Mężykowski, partner and legal advisor, with 17 years’ experience in advising the financial sector and in the area of transaction financing. He is joined by the following counsels: Martyna Markiewicz, Jakub Podkowa and Jakub Wieczorek, as well as associates: Monika Kowara, Kamila Singer, Karolina Zając, Mateusz Wiśniewski and lawyer Jakub Przybyłek.

In total, the CMS banking and finance practice comprises 17 lawyers, and is the largest in the Polish market. The former leader of the CMS team in Poland and CEE, Mark Segall, will continue to lead the practice at the regional level.

Michał Mężykowski, the partner heading the banking and finance practice, has advised financial institutions and investors for 17 years on transaction financing, with a particular focus on the real estate market, financing investment projects and company acquisitions. His specialisation also includes consultancy in the field of export financing. He has also cooperated with financial institutions in areas such as establishing branches, outsourcing business functions and payment services. His experience includes consultancy services for financial institutions in the field of restructuring and bankruptcy law. He is recommended by the international legal rankings as a banking and finance expert in Poland. He has been associated with Dentons for 17 years (since 2010 as a partner).

Martyna Markiewicz, counsel and legal adviser, has been advising clients for over 10 years on financing transactions and restructuring projects. She has represented both financial institutions, including the largest Polish and foreign banks, as well as investors, including real estate funds and private equity funds. Her professional specialisation includes domestic and cross-border corporate acquisition financing as well as real estate projects, including the financing and refinancing of the construction of shopping centres, office buildings and residential investments. She also provides advice on export finance, assignments of credit facility claims and complex debt restructuring projects. Since 2007, she has been associated with Dentons.

Jakub Podkowa, counsel and legal advisor, has 12 years’ experience of advising banks and other financing entities as well as borrowers on the preparation and negotiation of loan-related documentation. He has also supervised due diligence analyses. He focuses on advising on the financing of on-going operations of business entities as well as investments in all branches of the economy, with particular emphasis on the commercial real estate market. He has advised domestic and foreign financial market institutions on regulatory issues, including outsourcing, banking secrecy, establishing branches and representative offices. Previously associated with Dentons, including as a counsel since 2015, Jakub has been recommended by Chambers and Partners in Chambers Europe and Chambers Global editions.

Jakub Wieczorek, counsel and advocate, has been specialising for over 10 years in banking and financial law, in particular in financing company acquisitions, corporate financing, asset and project financing, and real estate financing. He is regularly involved in complex financing transactions, both on the side of financial institutions, representing the largest Polish and foreign banks, as well as private lenders and investors, advising Polish and foreign listed companies, real estate funds, private equity funds and private investors. He also advises on regulatory matters. Since 2014 he has been associated with Dentons, and previously also cooperated with Clifford Chance. He has been recognised by IFLR ranking 1000 as a “Rising Star” in the “Banking” and “Project finance” categories.

“Our banking practice traditionally has strong regulatory and restructuring competences, and now we have decided to strengthen the part of the team that specialises in financing. In this way, we have broadened the services we can offer our clients, in particular clients planning large transactions on the Polish market and developing business on foreign markets through exports and acquisitions. We see a number of synergies between the strengthened banking practice and the real estate, infrastructure and M&A teams” – says Małgorzata Surdek, CMS managing partner in Poland.

The CMS banking and finance practice has many years of experience in advising Polish and foreign financial institutions and borrowers, and is consistently recommended by Chambers and Partners, Legal 500 and IFRL1000.
