CMS & the start-up scene

500 international and Austrian start-ups, about 300 investors – a total of about 2,500 visitors frequented the Hofburg Imperial Palace in Vienna in May 2016 and once again made it the start-up scene’s temporary stamping ground: for the 5th time already, the Pioneers Festival was successfully staged in Vienna. And right in the middle: CMS. “Safety sail around the cliffs of regulation!” – this was the slogan of a spotlight session held by CMS in which experts offered answers to fundamental legal questions arising in the founding phase. Obligations and responsibilities of business founders, data security and the protection of copyrights, trademarks and know-how: these are just some of the topics CMS partner Gregor Famira, who heads the start-up initiative of CMS in Vienna, and CMS attorney Gabriela Staber explored with their audience.

But CMS and start-ups, that’s not a one-way (consultation) street. Continuous development and, as a consequence, new technologies that fundamentally change the way legal experts work and the business model they apply in their law firms also take centre stage at CMS. At the moment, European law firms use legal technology that enables the digitalisation and automatisation of work flows to a very limited extent. What is more, there is only a small number of start-ups in Europe offering such specialised software solutions. Against this backdrop, the European Legal Technology Association (ELTA) was founded in 2016 to drive development in this field, connect its stakeholders and support research in legal technology. Law firms, companies, legal technology providers and also interested individuals have joined forces in this pan-European association. And further crucial members: start-ups that will play a leading role in the digital transformation of the legal consulting industry. Our German partner firm CMS Hasche Sigle is among the founding entities, together with the Bucerius Center on the Legal Profession, Baker & McKenzie, Leverton and Roland Berger.
