CMS advises ALPLA on joint venture for recycled plastics in Thailand

30/09/2019

Packaging solutions provider ALPLA and Thai PTT Global Chemical Public Company entered into an agreement to establish a joint venture to manufacture and sell mechanically recycled plastics from used packaging materials.

ALPLA and PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited, a Thai group listed on the Thailand stock exchange and which is active in the petrochemical and refining sector, have entered into a joint venture that will manufacture and sell mechanically recycled plastics, specifically recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) and recycled high density polyethylene (rHDPE) from used packaging materials. The formation of the joint venture is subject to customary regulatory approvals such as merger control clearances; it is expected that the transaction will be completed by the end of 2019/Q1 2020.

International law firm CMS is advising Alpla on all legal aspects related to this transaction. "Sustainability and furthering the principles of a circular economy are key factors in the future of the packaging industry and we are proud to be able support ALPLA as a leading player in such efforts", says lead partner Alexander Rakosi.

The international CMS team led by Alexander Rakosi (partner, corporate/M&A) also includes Oliver Werner (associate, corporate/M&A); Dieter Zandler (partner, competition), Ruth Bittner (associate, competition), Marlene Wimmer-Nistelberger (associate, competition) as well as CMS competition teams in China and Turkiye.
