Klaus Pateter promoted to attorney-at-law at CMS

After Klaus Pateter has joined CMS in Vienna only at the end of last year as an associate, he has now taken the next step on his career journey. Being admitted to practice in Austria, he now devotes his attention to areas of law in which speed plays a major role as well: Technology, Media & Communications (TMC) and Intellectual Property (IP). Klaus specialises in technology litigation, Industry 4.0, digital and blockchain-based business models, data protection and data security, as well as counselling technology start-ups.

We recruited Klaus while he was still in the middle of his Master’s program at the prestigious Columbia Law School in New York City, one of the top 5 law schools in the USA. At CMS, he will also be deeply involved in the firm’s activities in advising tech start-ups,” says Johannes Juranek, Managing Partner of CMS in Vienna and himself one of the leading experts in technology law. Alongside his work as an attorney, Klaus is also a member of the global Legal Tech working group at CMS, where he focuses on the development of legal tech services for CMS clients.

Klaus Pateter brings invaluable experience from his work at a renowned law firm in Graz, where he advised companies on IP/IT, data protection, corporate, venture capital and start-up financing matters. Moreover, he was also on the board of directors of a Graz-based venture capital company that invests in technology start-ups.
A native of Styria, he also acquired professional and methodological excellence through his association with the University of Graz as a university assistant and lecturer at the Institute of Civil Procedure and Insolvency Law.

Career and international know-how
Klaus Pateter completed both his degree and his doctorate in law at the University of Graz (2009, 2016). He published his thesis on “Die Krisenwarnpflichten der Rechts- und Wirtschaftsberater” (The crisis warning obligations of legal and business consultants) with LexisNexis in 2018.

In the same year, Klaus Pateter obtained a Post Graduate Master (LL.M.) from Columbia Law School in New York City, where he focused on IP law, data protection, blockchain applications and cryptocurrencies. He passed the New York Bar Exam and will be admitted to the New York Bar soon. Klaus regularly gives lectures and publishes articles in his areas of expertise.
