07/01/2020

The circle of partners at the international law firm CMS continues to grow. With the appointment of Stefan Paulmayer to the position of Partner at CMS in Vienna on 1 January 2020, the team at the Viennese law firm is gaining a proven expert in finance and new technologies.

Stefan Paulmayer (38), born in Vienna, began his legal career at CMS Vienna in 2008 as an associate. From early 2010, he worked for other renowned international law firms. Now this expert in finance and capital markets law is returning to CMS as a Partner, focusing on the core areas of financing and real estate financing. Stefan Paulmayer will also advise national and international clients on restructurings and refinancings, securitisations, derivative transactions, crypto assets and new technologies. His clientele in the past has included Conda AG and Bitpanda GmbH, whom Paulmayer advised on their successful Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Financial expert with extensive experience in transactions

Early in his career, while with CMS, Stefan Paulmayer specialised in banking and capital markets law, advising clients such as Liechtensteinische Landesbank (Austria), Steiermärkische Krankenanstalten Immobiliengesellschaft (KAGes), Raiffeisen Zentralbank and BAWAG P.S.K. Wohnbaubank.

While working for a leading Austrian law firm, from 2010 to 2018, he also focused on financial law, especially structured finance like securitisations, derivative transactions, financial services supervisory law and financings. The 38-year-old is considered a proven expert in these areas with a wealth of transactional experience, often working at the interface between capital markets law and supervisory law, insolvency law and corporate law in major (cross-border) transactions. Besides providing advice on classical (real estate) finance, Paulmayer has been a member of the transaction teams that advised national and international banking groups on major cross-border restructurings (bauMax Group and Mercator). In the area of bank recovery and resolution, Stefan Paulmayer helped advise HETA Asset Resolution AG and ÖVAG in connection with their respective wind-down proceedings.

In addition, Stefan Paulmayer is an expert in securitisations and asset-backed-financing transactions. Among the largest securitisations in which he has been involved are the EUR 230 million securitisation of leasing receivables originated by UniCredit Leasing Group (2015), the EUR 440 million securitisation of leasing receivables originated by Raiffeisen Group (2016) and the CHF 475 million refinancing of the government quarter in St Pölten through the securitisation of rent receivables (2017).

Other areas on which Stefan Paulmayer has increasingly focused in recent years are new technologies like blockchain – a topic that is gaining massively in importance, especially in the real estate sector – as well as alternative forms of financing.
“In Stefan Paulmayer we are acquiring an experienced expert in Banking & Finance. His arrival means that we are expanding our service portfolio and are delighted to be able to support clients in the areas of blockchain, smart contracts and crypto assets as well now,” enthuses Günther Hanslik, Partner in Banking & Finance at CMS Vienna.

Stefan Paulmayer graduated in law at the University of Vienna in 2007 and was registered as an attorney-at-law in May 2013. Every year since 2017, Stefan Paulmayer has been named as a “Rising Star” (Leading Lawyer or Financial & Corporate) in the IFLR 1000 rankings.
