CMS Lawyers Host Webinars Discussing Tax Structuring of Investments in the BRIC Countries

20/02/2013

CMS lawyers are hosting a series of free webinars discussing tax structuring of investments in the BRIC countries for European multi-national companies.

The tax webinar series is based on the content CMS tax experts have developed for the November 2012 CMS Tax Practice Area Group conference, held on November 15, 2012 in Maison des Polytechiciens in Paris, covering four jurisdictions, Russia, China, Brazil and India. The CMS member firms lawyers, under the overall chairmanship of Stéphane Gelin, tax partner of CMS Bureau Francis Lefebvre, addressed 4 topics together with European companies facing the shifting regulatory, tax and legal environment challenges.

The tax webinar series started with Russia on February 7 and followed by China (February 14), Brazil (February 21) and India (February 28). The webinars are led by CMS tax experts who have comprehensive tax knowledge and a strong commercial awareness of these local markets. Each session lasts one hour, covers one jurisdiction and is held in English. Each webinar ends with a question and answer session open to the attendees. The goal of these webinars is to share CMS tax expertise and synergy of CMS member firms with European multi-national companies, and let those companies who did not attend the November conference to participate in webinar online.

The China session entitled “A long march for investors?” was moderated by Björn Demuth, a Germany based partner focusing on both tax law and compliance law. Speakers included France based partner Xavier Daluzeau, specialized in transfer pricing law in Europe and having extensive experiences in dealing with cross-border transfer pricing matters with China, and Shanghai based partner Nicolas Zhu, specialized in tax and transfer pricing law in China and working extensively with CMS member firms on tax and transfer pricing matters in China. Nicolas explained corporate law, tax law, regulatory issues, foreign exchange new development and VAT reform issues in the course of investment in China. Xavier and Björn discussed tax structure issues and transfer pricing rules respectively, by considering structuring through a Belgian or UK company, due to the revised double tax treaties of these countries which have not yet been ratified by China. Nearly 80 participants attended the webinar event online.

The Brazil session “Getting ready to play the game” and India session “Tax clouds on the new investment horizon?” was held on February 21 and February 28, respectively, both at 1:00 PM CET.
