CMS advises chemical producer Ineos on cumene plant project

30/07/2019

Cologne – Ineos Phenol GmbH will build a state-of-the-art cumene unit in Marl Chemical Park, to be completed in 2021. Cumol is an essential raw material for the production of phenol and acetone. The new 750,000 tonne unit will be fully integrated and uses existing pipeline connections between Ineos’ phenol and acetone production site in Gladbeck, the Evonik Chemiepark in Marl and the BP refinery and cracker complex in Gelsenkirchen. With the construction of the plant, Ineos intends to secure the supply of raw materials to the Ineos phenol and acetone plants located in Gladbeck and Antwerp for decades to come.

A team from CMS Germany provided Ineos with comprehensive legal advice on the project. This included drafting and negotiating all contracts in the areas of planning, plant construction, logistics, real estate and procurement. CMS advises Ineos on a regular basis.

Ineos' phenol division describes itself as the world's largest producer of phenol and acetone and the largest consumer of cumene. The annual manufacturing capacity is over four million tonnes per annum. The company employs around 600 people in Gladbeck, Marl, Antwerp (Belgium), Mobile, Alabama (USA) and Pasadena, Texas (USA). Ineos Phenol is part of the Ineos Group, one of the largest chemical companies in the world. With approximately 21,000 employees at 168 sites in 26 countries, Ineos generated sales of around USD60 billion in 2018.
