CMS Hasche Sigle advises DFL on marketing of German football league rights by Leo Kirch

12/10/2007

The Deutsche Fußball-Liga (DFL) has instructed Kirch subsidiary Sirius to invite tenders on the football league rights. The media entrepreneur Leo Kirch will market the national media rights in the football league from 2009 to 2015 and has guaranteed the clubs and public limited companies revenue of at least three billion euro.

The DFL will establish a foreign company to market the international rights. Between 2009 and 2015 the DFL expects proceeds of around 460 million euro from business abroad. A joint venture between Sirius and DFL, in which Sirius holds a 51% majority, will be responsible for producing the live pay-TV transmissions. The DFL was advised in the negotiations and drafting of the agreement by Munich partner Dr Thomas Summerer as lead partner. Starting in 2001 he developed the DFL legal department as chief lawyer until he changed to CMS Hasche Sigle as a partner in spring 2007.
