Reemtsma Collection goes to the Hamburg Museum of Work - CMS Hasche Sigle advises Reemtsma on Gift

09/11/2004

The Hamburg tobacco group Reemtsma is giving its impressive history of tobacco collection and the advertising archive of the company to the Hamburg Museum of Work. Hermann Lindhorst from the Hamburg office of CMS Hasche Sigle advised Reemtsma on making the gift which was officially handed over to the museum yesterday. Hamburg's senator for the arts Karin von Welck prized the outstanding significance of the collection "both from the point of view of the history of tobacco and for the economic history of the city of Hamburg". The German History Museum Berlin had also shown interest but the collection, the historical value of which Reemtsma's director, Dieter Müller , quoted as EUR 1.5m, now remains in the Hanseatic city as an important part of Hamburg company history. For the first time it will be accessible in its entirety to the public.

The archives are an extensive fund on the cultural history of tobacco, the cigarette industry and the history of advertising and trade mark development in the twentieth century. 3,000 objects dating from over four centuries, 500 cigarette advertising posters and 400 graphics are part of the tobacco history collection alone. The advertising archive from the 30s is an extensive archive of cigarette trade marks, some with original advertising drafts and fair drawings by well-known artists and illustrators starting in the year 1900. The marketing archive of the 50s up to the present day contains a collection of all Reemtsma and competitor marks as well as approx. 2,000 poster rolls and 25,000 advertisements, cinema and TV films, advertising material and between approx. 5,000 and 10,000 cigarette packets. The current marketing archive will be further developed by the Museum of Work on behalf of Reemtsma in the future.

Only last year did Reemtsma hand over its extensive photography archive with over 100,000 photographs to the museum.
