CMS bolsters insurance team with key partner hire in London

1 September 2020

International law firm CMS is pleased to announce the appointment of marine insurance and shipping lawyer David McKie as a partner in its Insurance and Reinsurance Group, based in the firm’s London office. David joins from Kennedys, where he was a partner.

David has nearly 25 years of experience handling UK and international property and liability insurance disputes across a range of marine business lines, including hull and machinery, marine liability, marine war risks, marine cargo and yachts. David’s practice also includes wet and dry shipping, international arbitration and commercial dispute resolution, experience in handling collision and salvage claims as well as shipbuilding and offshore construction disputes. David is a recognised expert in the shipping sector and was ranked in The Legal 500 UK in 2019.

Ed Foss, Head of the Insurance and Reinsurance Group at CMS UK, comments: “As a full-service law firm, what sets us apart from our competitors is our ability to call on specialist support from market leading colleagues across a range of disciplines. David’s expert knowledge of the shipping industry will further strengthen our market leading insurance practice and enable us to expand our international marine offering. We are pleased to welcome David to the firm.”

David’s appointment builds on the earlier expansion of the Insurance and Reinsurance Group in 2018 when the firm hired an eight-strong team of shipping and marine insurance lawyers led by partners Andrew Horton and Steven Wise, both top ranked lawyers in Chambers and The Legal 500. With London being one of the largest maritime centres, David’s experience significantly expands CMS’s international shipping and marine insurance capabilities and builds on existing capabilities offered by CMS’s offices in Germany, Holland and Russia. Based in London, David will work closely with the CMS teams in Europe and Hong Kong to capitalise on cross-border and cross-selling opportunities, and to deepen the firm’s specialist marine offer to clients globally.

David McKie adds: “I am delighted to be joining CMS. With its global reach and industry credibility, the firm offers an ideal platform for the growth and development of our marine practice. I look forward to working closely with the teams, both in London and internationally, to help broaden the firm’s insurance offering and deliver the best value for our clients.”

CMS’s Insurance and Reinsurance Group has more than 100 insurance lawyers able to assist on the full range of national and international insurance issues. The firm is a recognised market leader, enjoying top tier rankings in both Chambers and The Legal 500. CMS also has extensive experience advising across the maritime industry, working with a range of clients within the sector, including financial institutions, leading national and international private companies and the ‘supermajors’ in the oil and gas market.
