CMS boosts Pensions practice with key appointment in Scotland

26 October 2020

International law firm CMS is delighted to announce the appointment of pensions partner Jae Fassam, bringing the total partner count across its UK pensions law practice to 18. Jae joins from the Edinburgh office of Pinsent Masons and will be based in CMS’s Edinburgh office.

Mark Grant, Head of Pensions at CMS, comments: “Building on the appointment of partner Tim Green to our Manchester office a year ago and the promotion of Mark Jenkins to partner in London in May, Jae will add even further depth to our market-leading and award-winning pensions practice. He will be working closely with CMS partner Alistair Hill in our Glasgow office, backed by four other pensions lawyers based in Scotland. Jae brings with him a proven track record and deep understanding of the key pensions issues driving the local and national market. His experience will strengthen our ability to continue delivering high-quality and cutting-edge advice to clients across the UK and we are delighted to welcome him on board.”

Commenting on his appointment, Jae says: “CMS is the UK’s market leader for pensions law and it’s a really exciting time to be joining the highly experienced practice in Scotland which has a strong commercial focus to offer private and public sector clients. I look forward to joining the team and helping to bring that market-leading pensions expertise and resource to clients.”

Jae is an experienced pensions partner and advises trustees, employers and local government funds as well as advising on regulatory investigations and the pensions aspects of M&A. He is recognised as a leading individual in Chambers with clients praising his “excellent service” and “clear guidance” and is a member of the Association of Pension Lawyers’ Investment and DC Sub-committee.

Jae advises in relation to all aspects of pensions law with particular expertise in investment, financial services, energy, infrastructure and the public sector. His recent highlights include advising the Trustee of a large defined benefit scheme in funding negotiations with its FTSE-listed employer in parallel with a challenging refinancing and regulatory investigation and advising public sector funds on bespoke local authority investment opportunities and managing employer insolvency risk.

The CMS pensions practice has continued to strengthen its position over the past 12 months, advising on a string of ground-breaking transactions. In the last three months the firm has been named “UK Pensions Lawyers of the Year” at the Professional Pensions UK Pensions Awards and “Pension Law Firm of the Year” at the Pension and Investment Provider Awards, cementing its market-leading position. CMS was also awarded “Law Firm of the Year” for 2019/20 at the Herald Law Awards of Scotland.
