CMS has been named ‘Energy Team of the Year’ at The Lawyer Awards 2017. This is the second consecutive year that CMS has won the prestigious title, and the second award win for the Energy team in 2017 following its success at the Legal Business Awards in March.
The teams in both London and Mexico City were recognised for their innovative work advising the Mexican Ministry of Energy (SENER) on the high profile reform of the Mexican electricity industry. The team was led by Munir Hassan and Dame Fiona Woolf in London and Derek Woodhouse in Mexico.
The project, which The Economist called “the crown jewel” in the Mexican Government’s programme of reforms, was the biggest change to the Mexican electricity market in over forty years. It is the largest market reform of this scale in the world for more than a decade. It involved restructuring the electricity industry, creating a completely new wholesale electricity market and designing auctions for the procurement of a large pipeline of renewable energy projects.
SENER's former Managing Director of Electric Industry Coordination, Jeff Pavlovic, commented that, “We were extremely impressed by the way CMS worked with us, particularly in the context of a complex economic, regulatory and legal landscape. Working to challenging timeframes and coordinating the steps to the project was a testament to their industry expertise to provide the results they provided.”
Derek Woodhouse, Head of Energy at CMS's associate office in Mexico (Woodhouse Lorente Ludlow), said, “Our work on this ground-breaking project and the outstanding results achieved demonstrate our ability to transport the UK's market leading sector reform expertise into Mexico, work effectively across time zones, and deliver a major project within strict deadlines.”
This follows last year’s win at The Lawyer Awards, at which the Energy team was recognised for its advice on the first ever price control appeals brought before the CMA.
“We were honoured to be invited to work on this strategically important project. We are proud that, as well as winning awards, the work achieved its stated aim of delivering competitive prices in the market, to benefit everyday consumers,” remarked Munir Hassan, CMS’s Head of Clean Energy.
This recent success further confirms CMS’s position as a lead adviser on the most complex and innovative energy mandates across the world.
