CMS named a top UK employer for social mobility for fifth consecutive year

24 November 2021

International law firm CMS has been named a top UK employer for social mobility for the fifth consecutive year. The firm has ranked #13 in the Social Mobility Employer Index 2021 – CMS’s highest ranking in the Index to date.

Created by the Social Mobility Foundation, the Index identifies the top 75 UK employers that have taken the most action to improve social mobility in the workplace. The employers included in this year's Index were assessed across seven key areas, including their work with young people, routes into the company, how they attract talent, recruitment and selection, and progression.

CMS has successfully ranked in the Index every year since its launch in 2017. This year, the firm has significantly improved on its 2020 ranking, climbing 28 places, reflecting CMS’s ongoing commitment to supporting social mobility initiatives. More than 200 organisations entered the Index this year (a 41% increase since 2020), making this improved ranking even more meaningful.

Penelope Warne, The Senior Partner at CMS, comments: “We are delighted to be recognised as a top employer for social mobility. This supports the inclusive culture we have created at CMS that enables the careers of all our employees to thrive. CMS is committed to widening access to the legal profession and facilitating mobility to ensure that we are attracting the brightest talent.”

She adds: “The pandemic created significant challenges in terms of access to information and employability skills training offered by employers and we have worked hard to overcome these obstacles. Through strong partnerships with our communities and clients, we have seen how our actions can help build better futures for all.”

The firm continues to actively work to improve social mobility and create sustainable and rewarding futures for its clients, people and communities. The CMS Law Scholarships programme is now in its tenth year helping young people from low socio-economic backgrounds to enter the legal profession. CMS also recently launched new Business Development & Marketing and Legal Operations graduate programmes, and continues to run its Solicitor Apprenticeships programme.

In June 2020, CMS launched the #CMSBuildingBetterFutures Hub, an online resource aimed at young people in secondary school education. The Hub provides insights into CMS, the workings of the legal industry, and some of the many different roles that make up a commercial law firm. There are also resources to support young people to develop the key skills required for further education and the world of work.
