CMS secures no 2 spot in public M&A legal adviser rankings

12 February 2020

CMS closed out 2019 continuing its run of success at remaining one of the most active players on public M&A transactions, as confirmed in Perfect Information’s M&A Insight (M&Ai) Report 2019. CMS ranked at no 2 by deal volume in the UK public M&A legal adviser rankings, up seven spots from 2018.

The CMS team had a very active 2019, advising on public M&A transactions valued at over £5.3 billion. Among its highlights, the CMS team advised Ei Group on its £3bn takeover by Stonegate Pub Company; a deal which shook up Britain’s pub industry and created the largest pub company in the UK. Other transactions included:

  • Galliford Try’s £1.1 billion sale of housing businesses to Vistry
  • London Metric’s £450 million takeover of A & J Mucklow Group
  • Primary Health Properties’ £392 million merger with MedicX Fund
  • Rank Group’s £115m takeover of Stride Gaming
  • Divitas Bidco's £79 million takeover of Nasstar
  • Synnovia’s $49 million takeover by BPF1

Alasdair Steele, Head of CMS’ Equity Capital Markets group, comments: “The public M&A market was anything but subdued in 2019, where we witnessed a combination of strategic transactions between businesses and take-private transactions led by private equity funds. CMS is proud to have taken a lead role on some of the largest UK public M&A deals of 2019 and we look forward to continuing this trend in 2020 as one of the market’s most active advisers.”
