Being open about data

Rebound & Remodel

7 July 2021

Covid-19 has put data in the spotlight more than ever.

Without the widespread use of data and data analysis, combined with the proliferation of data sharing, management of the pandemic would have been impossible. Sadly, many more people would have died. Likewise, the tremendous international efforts to find and test vaccines, and then roll them out at speed, were facilitated by data at every stage.

To achieve these objectives, open data collaboration between employers, companies, governments and multinational agencies has been unprecedented.

In our report we examine the aftermath: a resurgent battle for data between China and the US, the two dominant tech players, as the EU strives to legislate further in protecting individual rights to data privacy.

We also speak to Jule Sigall, associate general counsel of Open Innovation at Microsoft’s IP Group, who is a keen advocate of the long-term benefits of open data and data sharing.
