Determination and resilience as human qualities

CMS DIGITALBYTES

28 November 2019

I was saddened today when I read that Lee Se-dol has decided to retire as a professional GO player seemingly because of Alpha Go.   He is reported as stating "I'm not at the top even if I become the number one. There is an entity that cannot be defeated." Determination and resilience are human qualities that are valued in society (as far as I see it) and perhaps there is a risk of those qualities being lost, at least in the narrow fields in which AI excels at present.

Perhaps we will need to find new fields in which humans can strive to be the best, even over AI systems. If fewer human players continue to play GO to advanced levels then advanced human skills at GO playing will be lost.  But having said that, the availability of computer systems like Alpha GO also gives the opportunity for more humans to play the game.

Go master quits because AI 'cannot be defeated'
