Following the adoption of the GDPR, member states are currently reviewing their existing national data protection laws. Many of them will also have to reform their supervisory authorities. The GDPR’s influence even goes beyond the EU: some non-EU countries (eg. Switzerland) are currently also reviewing their data protection laws while keeping an eye on the GDPR. At the same time, there is great uncertainty about the solidity of the EU-US Privacy Shield and the EU approved model clauses (will they stand judicial scrutiny?) and about the privacy regulatory framework in the UK post-Brexit.
Meanwhile, most of the companies have started preparing for the GDPR. As our offices actively participate in these projects throughout the EU, now we can see the first practical issues and their proposed solutions. There is only one year left until 25 May 2018 - the “go-live” date - so it is time to discuss the existing experiences and the upcoming tasks.

Tom De Cordier is the Data Protection and TMC partner at CMS Brussels. Tom has extensive experience in advising high profile international clients on his core specialism of privacy and data protection law, telecommunications law, IT law and technology-related IP. Tom regularly assists multinational companies in multi-jurisdictional privacy GDPR implementation compliance projects. He frequently speaks at conferences and seminars on data protection topics. He is also frequently asked to share his views on privacy topics by leading financial newspapers.
Dóra Petrányi is a partner of CMS Budapest, Managing Director of CEE at CMS and she is the head of Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT). Her areas of specialisation include data protection, competition law, IP law, public procurement matters, general commercial contracts, corporate restructuring and M&A.
Márton Domokos is a senior counsel in the TMT team of the Budapest office of CMS Cameron McKenna, he provides day-to-day data protection advices in various sectors. As part of his regulatory expertise, Márton has specific knowledge of and continuously monitors the regulatory developments in the field of data privacy. He is the president of the Data Protection Board of the Direct and Interactive Marketing Association (FEDMA member).
