Virtual roundtable discussion: Episode #12: CEE – the Outlook for the Region

Is M&A in CEE turning a corner? M&A activity in CEE this year has been entangled in higher inflation, rising interest rates and an uncertain economic outlook. Against this backdrop, M&A projections for the coming 12 months are mixed, with a clear divergence between Private Equity and Corporate dealmakers.

According to CMS and Mergermarket’s European M&A Outlook 2024, which reflects the views of over 330 corporate and PE firms based in Europe, the Americas and APAC on their expectations for the year ahead, the vast majority of respondents, both Corporate and PE, expect to be involved in the M&A market over the coming period, suggesting that despite concerns, a healthy volume of activity can be expected. And with valuations appearing to have stabilised over the course of 2023, the stage looks set for a meeting of minds between buyers and sellers over the medium term – at which point M&A may well start truly turning the corner.

  • What does the activity on the M&A market in the CEE region look like?
  • What will the investment appetite in CEE be like?
  • What is the secret of the CEE market’s resilience to the crisis?

We are pleased to launch our second virtual roundtable from the series organised together with Emerging Europe. In this video, our panellists, Helen Rodwell (Managing Partner in Prague and Bratislava), Horea Popescu (Head of CEE Corporate/M&A and Managing Partner in Bucharest), Błażej Zagórski (Partner, Corporate in Warsaw) and our guest speaker Andrew Wrobel (Founding Partner of Emerging Europe), discuss the key developments, challenges and opportunities for businesses and investors in the CEE region.

Virtual roundtable discussion:
Episode #11: Greenfield investment opportunities in CEE

CEE’s profile has been on the rise in recent years, attracting a substantial proportion of greenfield investments in the region. Companies have been attracted by factors including a skilled workforce, lower labour costs and a range of generous investment incentives. In 2022 alone, we saw a wave of new investments announced, with a significant proportion from the automotive and renewable energy sectors. It appears likely that a number of companies will move part of their production back from the PRC to Europe, with CEE in prime position to attract much of this investment.

International companies wishing to invest in the CEE region will inevitably look at different markets before selecting a suitable location. There is strong competition between the different CEE countries and their respective investment agencies, and each will offer a range of incentives to larger investors.

We are pleased to launch our first virtual roundtable from the series organised together with Emerging Europe. In this video, our panellists, including Iain Batty (Head of CEE Commercia), Olga Belyakova (Co-head of CEE TMC), Juraj Fuska (Partner, Corporate), Andrzej Posniak (Managing Partner and Head of Tax in Poland) and our guest speaker Andrew Wrobel (Founding Partner of Emerging Europe), discuss greenfield opportunities in Central and Eastern Europe.
