Welcome to the Annual Review

Foreword by CMS Executive Chairman Cornelius Brandi

As a law firm, it is our task to guide you through these challenging times and help you benefit from opportunities by offering not only the right legal solutions but also sound business advice. As a full-service law firm with one of the most extensive geographic footprints, we are well prepared to help you.

To anticipate future developments that affect our clients’ businesses, we study key economic and societal trends. An example of this was our event in Davos in January 2017, on the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential impact on businesses and society as a whole, covering such issues as ethics, the future of work and the regulation of the interaction between man and machine. As you will read in this Annual Review, AI is also a reality for our own business, as CMS teams use AI solutions to increase the speed and efficiency of document analysis.

At the very core of CMS lies the fusion of global reach with local knowledge. In this Annual Review, you will find details of some of the interesting deals that we have worked on over the past year that illustrate this. For example, our teams advised New Zealand-based credit and financial risk insurer CBL Corporation on their acquisition of Securities and Financial Solutions Europe (SFS); supported private equity firm Oakley Capital with the sale of its controlling stake in Parship Elite to German media company ProSiebenSat.1; worked together to advise on the establishment of the World Esports Association and supported mutares AG of Munich on the acquisition of component manufacturer Balcke-Dürr from SPX Corporation.

It is also part of our strategy to grow alongside our clients’ business in places where they need our support. CMS is always on the lookout for new opportunities in established and upcoming markets, opening new offices in Hong Kong and Tehran in 2016. At the beginning of 2017, new firms from Chile, Colombia and Peru joined CMS. In the UK, two well-established City law firms, Nabarro and Olswang, joined CMS in May 2017. This represents the largest-ever merger in the UK legal market, positioning the firm for top City work and to serve international clients who require access to English law and English courts.

It is also important for us to use our talents and resources to make a positive impact on the world by supporting those who are working on solving social and economic challenges. This year, we are partnering with Room to Read, a global organisation dedicated to promoting literacy through programmes focused on education and gender equality. Like Room to Read, CMS believes that quality of life, health and economic opportunity all depend on education, of which literacy forms a key part.

Looking ahead, we will continue to evolve our firm to ensure that our clients worldwide have access to the services they need wherever they are.

My colleagues in the CMS Leadership team and I are always happy to hear from you if you have any comments or questions.
