Intellectual Property

Kvadrat, the leading European textile design company, has undergone an extensive growth and organisational turnaround in the past years.

Key initiatives included the implementation of new HR and organisational structures, expansion into Asia, the improvement of sales trends in various product areas and the development of its retail operations.

The company, which has a EUR 1.3bn annual turnover, has in the past used different law firm counsel in whichever jurisdictions they were active. However, in 2016, it decided to consolidate its legal advisers into a preferred panel.

CMS Stuttgart partner Matthias Eck, who has advised Kvadrat on intellectual property matters for over twenty years, was asked to co-ordinate this process on behalf of Kvadrat.

Following a multi-firm pitch, CMS has been retained to advise Kvadrat on all legal matters in seven jurisdictions in which they are active: Austria, China, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland.

Matthias Eck, who leads the global Kvadrat relationship at CMS, said, “Kvadrat has an extremely strong internal culture and specific ways of transacting with external organisations. In addition to managing the relationship and giving legal
advice, my role is to explain this way of working to each of the country contacts at CMS so that the client is comfortable we all understand their key business drivers before embarking on any legal matters.”

Having the scale to assist Kvadrat, and an in-depth knowledge of its operations, allows us to effectively become an extension of the business. It is a truly collaborative relationship.
