Die Zeit and CMS to Host “Future of Energy” Forum in Davos

20/01/2015

Frankfurt, 20 January 2015. Die Zeit, Germany’s leading weekly newspaper, and CMS, a top 10 global law firm, will gather business and political leaders from across the world for ‘The Future of Energy’ forum, to be held in Davos on the occasion of one of the world’s foremost business summits on the 22nd January 2015.

The forum will feature a panel discussion, including speakers Peter Jackson, Vice President of Upstream Research at IHS and Senior Director at Cambridge Energy Research Associates; Dev Sanyal, Executive Vice President, Strategy and Regions at BP plc; Professor Paul Stevens, Distinguished Fellow, Energy, Environment and Resources at Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs and Penelope Warne, Senior Partner and Head of Energy at CMS.

The discussion will focus on the key energy issues affecting global businesses in 2015, including the impact of plummeting oil prices and the changing energy agenda of governments.

Penelope Warne, Senior Partner and Head of Energy at CMS, said: “The halving of oil prices in recent months is a major concern for energy companies and their investors. Strategic review is high on the agenda for many corporates as they look to minimise the negative impacts, such as on investment in new projects, and take advantage of potential acquisition opportunities. There are many challenges but alongside those challenges are opportunities for the oil companies and for lawyers with innovative solutions.”

Cornelius Brandi, Chairman of the CMS Executive Committee, said: “Our energy sector group has experienced a significant increase in demand for legal advice, as some oil-producing countries are preparing to play a much more important role in the world’s crude oil supply while others are losing ground due to the oil price falling to its lowest level for many years. We are delighted to partner with Die Zeit and look forward to hearing our guests’ views on the dramatic changes in the energy market.”

The event is by personal invitation only, taking place from 3:00pm to 5:00pm on Thursday 22nd January 2015.

CMS has 245 lawyers in its energy sector group, which covers all aspects of the energy spectrum, including oil and gas, wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, biomass and biofuels, nuclear, coal and power. The group advises clients as far afield as Mexico and Aberdeen and has a strong presence in Africa and the Middle East, with offices in Algeria, Morocco, Dubai and Oman.
