FinTech reshapes financial services as sector booms

"FinTech is constantly changing and expanding. Every day we see new businesses, new products and new approaches to old problems and new applications of technologies."
CHARLES KERRIGAN
Partner Banking & Finance CMS London

Innovation within the financial technology (FinTech) industry has transformed the financial services market. FinTech has reshaped business transactions, the insurance industry, asset management and money itself. It has helped make the financial services market more efficient by advancing banking operations, digitalising the industry and improving transparency. The day-to-day use of technology in people’s lives has created a greater need for financial institutions to adopt FinTech and stay competitive in the changing landscape.

By working with a wide range of clients in the FinTech area, CMS has gained deep expertise in areas such as outsourcing, cloud computing, data privacy, technology contracts and M&A. We also have additional niche expertise in areas such as crowdfunding, crypto-currencies, artificial intelligence and Blockchain.

We work for start-ups and unicorns, for banks we’ve known for many years and for banks  that have just been established, for technology companies that are moving into finance and for technology companies that provide services to finance businesses. For example, large financial institutions contact us to advise them on challenges such as business transformations involving technology, investment in FinTechs and commercial partnerships with FinTechs.

CMS London partner Charles Kerrigan said, “FinTech is constantly changing and expanding. Every day we see new businesses, new products and new approaches to old problems and new applications of technologies. It’s the most interesting period in finance for as long as I’ve been working.”

Our lawyers are thought leaders in this area. This year, they have published books on emerging technologies, on artificial intelligence and on IP finance. They sit on policy groups at the highest level, including at the Bank of England and the UK All Party Parliamentary Groups on Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence.
