Will CBAM really help EU businesses?

Environmental webinar

Past event
09 June 2022, 14:00 - 15:00 UTC +02:00

The proposal for the EU carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) was adopted by the European Commission in July 2021 to complement the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). The goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions cost-effectively in line with the Fit for 55 objectives. CBAM aims to impose a CO2 charge on products entering the EU so that European industry can operate on an equal footing with foreign manufacturers, in order to reflect additional costs that EU domestic industry bears under EU climate policies. CBAM will impact goods from the following sectors: cement, aluminium, fertiliser, electricity, iron and steel. It will also have a huge impact on international trade globally between non EU-countries and the EU.

According to the European Commission, the main objective of CBAM is to protect EU businesses by counteracting the risk of carbon leakage. But businesses have raised many questions about CBAM, the most important being if it will really protect or in fact hinder the EU’s economy.

Our webinar will look at a variety of these aspects. Speakers during the event will include CMS experts including Agnieszka Skorupińska, Vitaliy Radchenko and Siobhan Kahmann. The seminar will include contributions from guest speakers representing some of the most active industry players in the effected sector: ArcelorMittal, Metinvest, APPLiA Home Appliances Association, Cemex and Polish Cement Association.

The session will run for 60 minutes, including a Q&A. Participation is free.
