Women on boards and company performance

5 February 2021

At CMS we place inclusion at the centre of our culture and at the heart of our business as it makes our firm a more rewarding place to work in and helps create a more sustainable business. In striving for gender equality, we partnered with CFA Society Poland to release a report ‘Women on boards and company performance’, which is aimed at verifying the view that gender equality is associated with better financial performance, lower risk, and a higher market valuation.

The research conducted on the 140 largest Polish listed companies included in the WIG20, mWIG40 and sWIG80 indices showed that, at the end of 2019, the share of women on boards was a mere 13.8%. Additionally, progress to rectify this imbalance has been slow, with an increase of only 3.8pp observed over the last decade. At the same time, firms with a higher representation of women on boards saw competitive advantages in terms of higher net margins and lower share price volatility.
