Amendment to the Dams Safety Regulation and Small Dams Regulation

Meet the Law

29/3/2018

Decree-Law no. 21/2018 of March 28

It was published today the Decree-Law no. 21/2018 of March 28, which issued the first amendment to the Dams Safety Regulation, approved in annex to Decree-Law no. 344/2007, of October 15, and approved the Regulation of Small Dams.

Under this amendment, the scope of the Dams Safety Regulation is limited to large dams, defined as dams with a height of 15 meters or more, or with a height of 10 meters or more, creating dams with a capacity greater than 1 hm3.

In its turn, the Small Dams Regulation will apply to dams not covered by the Dams Safety Regulation, of a height of less than 10 m or of a height of 10 m or more and less than 15 m whose dams have storage capacity equal to or less than 1 hm3.

With the publication of the present Regulation of Dams Safety, it is now intended to define the various competencies of the National Dams Safety Authority, as well as the qualifications of those who design, construct and exploit dams, and also presents some prescriptive measures regarding the design phase of the works.
