In which CMS office (besides your own) would you like to work and why?
I would choose the CMS office in Singapore as I love Asian culture and food. In addition, living in Singapore would bring me a bit closer to Sydney, Australia. This is a fantastic city where I spent one year during my LL.M. studies.
What has been your most memorable moment as a lawyer?
As a young attorney, I had to apply for a freezing order for a debtor’s assets located in Switzerland. The basis for our application was an old judgment by the German Supreme Court, in which our client had been awarded a bounty. We had to overcome various pitfalls such as matters of transitional law and the conversion of the claim as the bounty had been awarded to our client in German Marks. In the end, the Zurich District Court, which is known to be rather reluctant in issuing freezing orders, fully upheld our application. I will never forget this case, which was extraordinary from beginning to end.
If you weren’t a lawyer, how would you earn your living?
Before I joined CMS, I had started a diplomatic career with the Swiss Foreign Ministry. It was a very exciting and enriching experience, and the only reason I left that path was the lack of ‘truly legal work’. So, if I weren’t a lawyer, I would opt for the second-best profession and be a Swiss diplomat again!
