The Central and Eastern European (CEE) region has truly become a hub for film production in recent years – a trend that shows no sign of slowing.

Low production costs, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and a highly skilled workforce have all contributed to this growth. In addition, governments across the region remain highly supportive, offering a variety of incentives to attract investors and filmmakers.

Several high-profile productions have already chosen CEE as their base, including The Brutalist, Poor Things and Dune: Part Two.

CMS is a full-service law firm with sizeable offices in each of the countries covered in this guide. Drawing on our extensive experience advising film industry investors, we have created this quick guide to provide essential information on the available funding schemes across CEE.

This publication covers eight CEE jurisdictions: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Ukraine, and answers key questions such as:

  • What kind of incentives are available (e.g. cash rebates, subsidies, tax credits)?
  • What are the main conditions for receiving support?
  • What is the application procedure?

We hope you find this guide useful. Contact details for our local experts are included at the end of the publication. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any questions.
