Which lawyer would lawyers themselves choose?
Key contact
Jörgen Eklund, partner at CMS Wistrand, is one of three finalists for Advokaternas advokat 2025 (Lawyers’ Lawyer 2025) – an award presented by Dagens Juridik, in which lawyers vote for the colleague they themselves would choose to handle complex cases.
The fact that the nomination comes from peers in the industry makes it particularly significant. It reflects something that is central to the role of a lawyer: professional trust.
Trust is tested in disputes
In disputes, lawyers meet as opposing counsel. It is in these situations that professional judgement and integrity become visible – not only to the client, but also to colleagues in the industry.
Being voted for by other lawyers says something about how you are perceived in such contexts.
“I think it comes down to long-term relationships and how you act in difficult situations. In disputes, opposing counsel see how you argue your case and handle unexpected developments. That’s where trust can be built – or lost,” says Jörgen Eklund.
Relationships – even when interests clash
Disputes are rarely associated with relationship-building. At the same time, it is precisely in situations of conflict that long-term professional capital is formed. A respectful and transparent process creates the conditions for more effective case management and more constructive solutions – even when the parties are far apart.
Jörgen explains:
“Professional disagreement does not imply a lack of respect. On the contrary, clarity and integrity in a dispute can create stronger long-term trust between the parties. It is about being able to stand by your arguments without making the process personal. At the same time, you can – and should – be a pleasant colleague outside the courtroom.”
A reminder of the responsibility that comes with the role
Being nominated by industry peers means recognition from those who understand the practical realities of the profession.
“Being nominated by other lawyers feels incredibly rewarding and meaningful. These are colleagues who know what the work actually entails – how decisions are made and how difficult the trade-offs can be. It makes you pause and reflect on the responsibility that comes with the role,” concludes Jörgen.
Jörgen Eklund heads CMS Wistrand’s Insurance and Dispute Resolution group in Stockholm and has over 25 years of experience in insurance law and commercial disputes, both in court and in Swedish and international arbitration proceedings.
