The Footprints We Leave: Reflections on Fatherhood, Mentorship, and Legacy
As we commemorate Father's Day 2026, we celebrate not only fathers, but also the many individuals who embody the spirit of fatherhood through guidance, sacrifice, mentorship, protection, and unwavering support.

Today, we honour fathers in all their forms: fathers raising children each day, fathers-in-waiting preparing for the journey ahead, adoptive and foster fathers, grandfathers, uncles, coaches, teachers, mentors, and the countless men who step into a child's life when a father is absent. We also recognise those who participate in Big Brother Programmes and other mentorship initiatives, investing their time, wisdom, and care in the next generation.

Fatherhood is not defined solely by biology. It is defined by presence. It is demonstrated in the patient teaching of life's lessons, in quiet acts of service, in words of encouragement offered at the right moment, and in the values that are passed from one generation to the next.

For many of us, Father's Day is also a time of remembrance. We honour fathers who are no longer with us, but whose influence continues to shape our lives. Though they may have departed, their teachings remain, their examples endure, and the foundations they built continue to support generations that follow.

The poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow captured this sentiment beautifully in A Psalm of Life when he wrote:

"Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time."

These words remind us that every life leaves a legacy. The lessons imparted by fathers, grandfathers and mentors often outlive them, becoming part of the character and values of those they have guided. Their footprints remain long after they are gone.

The image of "footprints on the sands of time" speaks powerfully to Father's Day. Time moves steadily forward, yet the marks left by those who have loved, taught, and led with integrity can endure for decades. The true measure of fatherhood is not found in titles or accolades, but in the lasting impact made on the lives of others.

Many will also find comfort in the well-known religious reflection Footprints in the Sand. In the poem, a person looks back on life's journey and notices that during the most difficult moments there was only one set of footprints. Believing they had been abandoned, they learn that those were the times when God was carrying them.

For many fathers and father figures, this message resonates deeply. Fatherhood often involves carrying burdens unseen by others, offering strength during difficult seasons, and walking beside loved ones through challenges and uncertainty. It is a reminder that leadership is often demonstrated not by recognition, but by steadfast presence.

As a firm committed to diversity, inclusion and belonging, we recognise that families come in many forms and that experiences of fatherhood are diverse. We celebrate those who nurture, guide and support others, regardless of their formal title or family structure. We also acknowledge that Father's Day can evoke mixed emotions for some: those who have lost fathers, those separated from children, those longing to become fathers, or those navigating complex family relationships. We hold space for all these experiences with compassion and respect.

This Father's Day, let us celebrate the fathers among us, thank the mentors who have helped shape our paths, and remember those whose wisdom continues to guide us from memory.

May we each strive to leave our own positive footprints on the sands of time, through kindness, integrity, mentorship, and service, so that future generations may benefit from the paths we have helped create.

To all fathers, fathers-in-waiting, father figures, mentors, and to the cherished memories of fathers who have gone before us: thank you for the footprints you have left behind.

Happy Father's Day 2026.
