5G vision

A video series on the deployment of 5G across the world

5G is not just another G – it ushers in a new era of connectivity where the lower latency benefits show significant promise for organisations to innovate with their products, services and business models. However, 5G’s rollout, unlike the technology, has been far from super-fast.

Watch our video series for thoughts from CMS lawyers working in the 5G space on some of the legal and commercial challenges.

5G and the cloud

5G devices connected to the cloud bring new capabilities to multiple industries. Transmitting enormously increased amount of data, both upstream and downstream, requires the fast pace of 5G to help digitalisation further. However, we lack of one unique architecture or cloud that encompasses all data flows across the world. Javier Torre de Silva and Dora Petranyi discuss the threats and limitations.

Breaking the Deadlock - UK 5G Rollout

Site providers and operators must work better together to ease the deadlock that has slowed down the UK’s 5G rollout, following the introduction of the new Electronic Communications Code in 2017. Better collaboration will ultimately result in operators being able to widen network coverage and improve network speeds. In turn, site providers and landlords will deliver better connectivity for tenants and the wider public network users, whilst protecting their interest in the property. Martin Garner explains four key areas for improvement.

Excluding 5G equipment providers - a Romanian perspective

As we pursue 5G’s promised future, we must protect the security of connections, infrastructure, devices and applications. This is not just about the safety of network users, it is a matter of national security. Currently, increased concerns about the risks of acquiring and deploying technologies from untrustworthy suppliers are dominating international discussions. Watch Valentina Parvu and Sorin Predescu talk about the situation in Romania.

3 factors aligning in the time of 5G

The technological opportunity, political climate and money are all ready and lined up to deliver 5G. Peek into Chris Watson’s mind in this brief video.

Connectivity-as-a-service: the next opportunity for network operators?

Network operators are not going to make real money out of the ownership of the network but from the provision of connectivity services. Listen to Javier Torre de Silva and Chris Watson discuss how the 5G ecosystem may fit together, with telcos at the heart.

How will 5G deliver all it can deliver?

Network operators are using 5G as an extension of 4G, but this can only be temporary. Watch Chris Watson ponder how to succeed in the 5G game.

Is 5G being monetised?

For the time being, 5G is not truly being monetised, due to a variety of factors, not least its lack of availability in many countries. The solution to unlocking money will be delivering full 5G for B2B activities. Javier Torre de Silva explains why he thinks so.
