CEE Legal Matters | 17 May 2024

CMS Croatia Partner Marija Mušec and CMS Poland Partner Lukasz Szatkowski discuss the impact of regulatory developments on electricity storage in the CEE energy market.

In the interview, Marija Mušec emphasises that energy storage is a regulated activity that is essential for ensuring a balance of electricity supply and demand. While regulations are in place in most CEE countries, actual project implementation is necessary to validate these frameworks. Furthermore, Mušec notes the importance of more transparent government plans and reduced grid connection costs to facilitate the introduction of renewable energy sources.

The importance of electricity storage for stabilising grids and supporting renewable energy is a key focus for Lukasz Szatkowski. He explains that large-scale projects in Poland and neighbouring countries are heavily regulated, while smaller projects benefit from a more liberalised approach. Szatkowski notes that the regulatory framework is primarily influenced by local legislation, although capacity markets are shaped by EU-level policies.
