CMS launches Carbon Footprint App to encourage behavioural change

28 February 2020

CMS UK has launched its Test The Temperature mobile app, offering people across the firm a way to explore their own carbon footprint and encourage them to make simple but effective changes in behaviour at both home and work.

The idea for the app was prompted by the tremendous response of staff to a challenge issued on CMS #hacks – the firm’s idea generation platform – calling for innovative suggestions on how CMS could address climate change. This demonstrated a healthy internal appetite for green initiatives and, as a result, the Test The Temperature app was created.

The app focuses on five areas – Food, Travel, Recycling, Energy, and Things – asking users a series of questions under each category, with each answer having a positive or negative score depending on its relative impact on the environment. The results are then weighted and turned into a total score measured out of 100. The lower the score indicated on the ‘temperature’ gauge, the better the carbon footprint.

Every person who uses the app is asked to commit to improving the score they get at the end by 10% within the next three months.

Penelope Warne, The Senior Partner at CMS, comments: “We all have a responsibility to address climate change. Small behavioural changes on an organisational and individual basis are important and cumulatively make a difference. We are hoping this app guides us all in a positive direction when it comes to our carbon footprint. In the meantime, we are only a few months from establishing Science Based Targets for carbon reduction which will allow us to build on a programme of tangible and, most importantly, scientifically measurable activity to become carbon neutral. Our ambition is to achieve this by 2025 at the latest.”

To recognise and encourage participation, CMS will commit to planting one tree for every person who uses the app. Beyond the aggregate number of users and the total number of users pledging to make a change, CMS will not store any personal data – so all responses and scores will remain confidential.

Test The Temperature is one of a series of apps which the firm has developed. In 2018, CMS signed a global contract with ‘low code’ development platform OutSystems, and, as part of its By Design innovation proposition, the firm has recruited three developers and a UX specialist to work on app development. The team, led by CMS’ Head of Business Applications, Eugen Stokes, has been working on a whole series of internal apps as well as client-facing apps related to trademarks, patents, cyber breach and dawn raids.
