Barry Wong (FCIArb) is a dual-qualified disputes lawyer (Hong Kong and England and Wales) with 7+ years PQE in hands-on, day-to-day running of cases in the full life-cycle of arbitrations – from pre-action advice, drafting notices of arbitration, through to pleadings, disclosure, witness statements, expert reports, and all the way to arbitration hearings (both in person and virtually), awards, enforcement and appeals. 

Barry has experience in complex international arbitration as well as commercial litigation in all levels of the Courts of the HKSAR. Barry also has experience in various interlocutory matters such as jurisdictional challenges, security for costs, and consolidation / joinder.

Barry’s practice has a focus on construction and engineering claims and disputes in Asia, particularly in infrastructure and real estate development projects – covering various technical issues relating to EOT, loss and expense, delay and disruption, variations, defects, design, change in scope of work and LADs. Barry also works on non-contentious, transactional work, assisting developers, contractors and sub-contractors in all stages of the project development life-cycle.

Barry is a Committee Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators East Asia Branch Young Members Group, and a Council Member of the Society of Construction Law Hong Kong. Barry also is a certified Mental Health First Aider from the Mental Health Association of Hong Kong.

  • A Hong Kong statutory body on a cultural and recreational district project in respect of potential claims against the design consultant.
  • An international specialist sub-contractor (headquartered in Switzerland) in connection with claims against the main contractor in a high-rise commercial complex project in Phnom Penh, Cambodia (ICC arbitration seated in Singapore).
  • A Hong Kong listed construction company (headquartered in Hong Kong) in a dispute with its JV partner in acting as main contractor for the construction of a large-scale integrated resort and casino in Macau (UNCITRAL arbitration seated in Macau).
  • A foundations and excavation contractor (headquartered in Germany) in relation to claims against the main contractor on a large infrastructure project in Hong Kong (HKIAC domestic arbitration seated in Hong Kong).
  • An international design, architecture and engineering consultancy services firm (headquartered in the UK) in disputes involving the Hong Kong Government, the main contractor, and specialist sub-contractor, regarding a large-scale cross-border infrastructure project located in Hong Kong (HKIAC arbitration seated in Hong Kong). 
  • The specialist electrical sub-contractor (owned by a Hong Kong listed construction company) in disputes with its electrical sub-contractor, and in disputes with the main contractor (two separate HKIAC domestic arbitrations seated in Hong Kong), in a luxury hotel casino resort project in Macau. 
  • An international commercial and industrial property group (headquartered in Australia) in connection with claims against the main contractor regarding the construction of the client’s flagship development project in Hong Kong as part its regional expansion within the Asia market (HKIAC domestic arbitration seated in Hong Kong).
  • A non-profit racing and betting organisation in Hong Kong in disputes with its main contractor (negotiation, mediation and arbitration) regarding a redevelopment project located in Hong Kong in respect of two separate contracts for works.
