Geoffrey Shaw has extensive experience in construction and commercial disputes in Hong Kong SAR and the region. Geoffrey has worked in Hong Kong SAR for more than 30 years and has been acknowledged for over a decade as a leading lawyer in the area of construction in the Legal 500 Asia Pacific.

Geoffrey’s principal practice is litigation, with a focus on construction related arbitration and litigation, as well as ADR (both mediation and adjudication). Geoffrey has worked on some of the largest and most complex matters throughout Hong Kong SAR. In addition, he regularly advises clients through the SE Asian region.

Relevant experience

  • A large engineering organisation on and managing an arbitration against a Korean engineering organisation.
  • Hong Kong Government in relation to project issues (both legal and financial) and on disputes arising out of the Chek Lap Kok new airport project, including claims for many millions of dollars. 
  • Hong Kong company on a claim (HKD 85m) against a Middle Eastern bank.
  • Japanese contractor in relation to the construction of a pipe-line tunnel. The claim was in the vicinity of HKD 50m. Arbitration in Hong Kong before an English arbitrator.
  • Developer on defending claims in the vicinity of HKD 80m brought by its contractor. The dispute involved a large commercial development and claims by the contractor for delays and disruption, extra loss and expenses, and variations.
  • Developer in connection with construction of commercial/retail/residential complex in Beijing, involving the dismissal of the contractor.
  • Korean contractor in relation to the construction of a desalination plant in the Middle East. Claim in excess of HKD 100m.
  • Architect in connection with construction of Asian Development Bank headquarters in Manila.
  • Architect in connection with a dispute arising out of the construction of a bank headquarters in Hong Kong. Claim in excess of HKD 50m. Client succeeded in the Court of Final Appeal.
  • Contractors in connection with a dispute arising out of construction of a university in Saudi Arabia.
