The Energy (Net Metering) Regulations 2024

2 min read

On this page

The Cabinet Secretary for Energy recently gazetted the Energy (Net Metering) Regulations 2024 (the Regulations).

Provision of a framework for connection of electricity generated from solar wind and other sources to national and isolated grids through net metering has long been an intent and feature of Kenya’s Energy Policy.

The potential for the Regulations – through which owners of small electrical energy renewable systems will be permitted to feed excess power produced by their systems to the grid – to incentivize and accelerate renewable energy development in the country has long been studied and understood.

The Regulations are applicable to renewable energy technologies with an installed capacity of less than 1MW.

The Regulations came into effect on 18 June 2024.
