Bulgarian natural gas consumption to almost double by 2034
Key contacts
Bulgarian natural gas consumption is set to almost double from 28 TWh to 51 TWh by 2034, states the newly published ten-year network development plan (TYNDP) of Bulgaria’s natural gas transmission system operator (Bulgartransgaz EAD).
The plan, however, is still subject to final approval by the Bulgarian Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC).
According to the TYNDP, local Bulgarian production of natural gas is expected to increase in step with permits that have been issued for oil and natural gas exploration and production, particularly surrounding discoveries of gas deposits in the Black Sea.
The projects in which Bulgartransgaz EAD has made final investment decisions include the following:
- Increasing the capacity of the Chiren underground gas storage (by 2027): EUR 140 million;
- Developing the Vertical Gas Corridor (by 2026): EUR 400 million.
The projects in which Bulgartransgaz EAD’s investment decisions are pending include:
- Developing the East Maritsa region gas infrastructure (by 2027): EUR 110 million;
- Increasing the interconnection capacity with Greece (at Kulata): EUR 180 million;
- Developing Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Bulgaria hydrogen infrastructure project: EUR 2.2 billion.
In October 2024, the Alexandroupolis Independent Natural Gas System went into commercial operation, in which Bulgartransgaz EAD is a shareholder with a 20% stake. The project is strategically important because it provides entrance into the natural gas markets of southeastern and central Europe, which will offer Bulgaria access to reliable sources such as the US, Qatar and Egypt. The Alexandroupolis terminal is also a key entry point for the Vertical Gas Corridor initiative.
Expansion of the capacity of Bulgaria’s gas storage facility is a priority energy project. Its implementation will facilitate energy security, ensure security of supply and increase competition in the gas markets of Bulgaria and southeastern Europe.
Bulgartransgaz EAD is also planning to develop a high-pressure infrastructure to supply consumers in the East Maritsa region. Specifically, the new high-pressure gas transmission infrastructure will have the transmission capacity to supply thermal power plants and other potential consumers in the East Maritsa coal region.
