Anna Tanova is a Senior Associate at CMS Sofia in the Commercial, Regulatory and Dispute Resolution practice group. She heads the IT and Media Practice.

Anna specialises in competition and IP and has significant experience in advising clients in the Media industry such as TV and radio- broadcasters, cable and satellite operators, advertising agencies and web platforms in IP and competition cases, audio-visual production projects, anti-piracy initiatives, media and advertising regulation and other regulatory and self-regulatory matters and initiatives and ongoing corporate and commercial activities of the clients.

Anna Tanova is also currently Executive Director at the Association of Bulgarian Broadcasters – ABBRO - a non-governmental body representing TV and Radio broadcasters in Bulgaria, member of the board of the National Council for Journalism Ethics and member of the Ethical Committee to the National Council for Self-regulation.

Prior to joining CMS, Anna was Head of the Legal Department at bTV Media Group, part of the Central European Media Enterprises (CME) – one of the biggest TV and radio- broadcasters in Bulgaria, consulting and representing the company in all legal aspects of the company’s activity.

Relevant experience

  • One of the biggest Bulgarian TV broadcasters in cases for abuse of dominant position on the national TV advertising market and the national TV distribution market and in a case for abuse of market power in negotiations on the national TV distribution market before the Bulgarian Commission for Protection of Competition (CPC) and the Supreme Administrative Court.
  • One of the biggest DTH operators on unfair competition cases before the CPC and the Supreme Administrative Court.
  • The Bulgarian Association of Cable and Communication Operators in case initiated against the collective management organisation PROPHON before the CPC and the Supreme Administrative Court.
  • On behalf of the TV and radio- broadcasters in a working groups to the Ministry of Culture and the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs on the latest amendment of the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act to implement Directive 2014/26/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 26 February 2014 on collective management of copyright and related rights and multi-territorial licensing of rights in musical works for online use in the internal market.
  • Negotiations with the collective management organisations on tariffs applicable to the radio, TV industry and the VoD services.
