Alberto Mata Rodríguez is the Head of the Banking & Finance Department of CMS Spain and the Co Head of CMS Corporate & Acquisition Finance Group. He is qualified to practice law in Spain and in the State of New York (U.S.) – something very unique in the Spanish legal market.

In the latest years, Alberto has been recognized, as international expert, in the Banking and Finance practice by the renowned directories IFLR1000 and Chambers & Partners (Europe & Global).

Prior joining CMS, Alberto was the Head of Legal Iberia of Deutsche Pfandbriefbank AG, a specialist German bank for real estate finance. During that time, he had multiple notable recognitions, among others, by Legal 500, who included him in its GC Power List Spain 2018, and the Choiseul Institute, who highlighted him as one of the top fifty Economic Leaders for Tomorrow in Spain for years 2018 and 2019.

He previously worked as a senior attorney at Gómez-Acebo & Pombo; externed the Financial and Fiscal Law Unit of the International Monetary Fund; leaded the Young Lawyers Committed of the International Bar Association; and continuously collaborated with the World Bank from 2014 until now in the B-Ready Report (formerly Doing Business Report).

Relevant experience

He represents the main Spanish and international institutions (Lenders and Borrowers) active in Spain in high-value and complex financing transactions. His practice encompasses a wide range of financings, such as corporate and acquisition finance; real estate finance; venture debt; film financing; and project finance (energy and infrastructure). And, his work extends to both domestic and cross-border transactions, ensuring comprehensive legal support for clients operating on a global scale.

In addition, he currently serves as Secretary of the Board of Trustees of UNICEF Madrid Committee (Junta Directiva de Madrid); Vice-President of the Board of Trustees (Patronato) of Fundación HogarSí; member of the Board of Directors of PRIMERO H SOCIMI SOCIAL – which is the first SOCIAL REIT in Spain –; member of the Board of Trustees of the International Institute (Instituto Americano de Madrid); member of the European Law Alumni Advisory Board of Georgetown Law; and member of the SPPI Counsil Advisory Board of the International Bar Association.

Alberto is an adjunct professor of (i) Business Law and Finance Transactions at IE Law School; (ii) Trust and Torts at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid; and (iii) Business Law at Escuela de Organización Industrial (EOI); and holds an Executive Fellowships of the Iacocca Institute of Lehigh University.

During his career, he has received multiple awards, such as the IBA Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year in Recognition of William Reece Jr. Award (2013); Universidad Carlos III Excellence Award for Alumni (2014); and IE Law School Academic Teaching Excellence Award (2023).

Education

Alberto has a Degree in Law (J.D. equivalent) and Business Administration Degree (B.B.A.), both, from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid; a LL.M. in Securities & Financial Regulation from Georgetown University Law Center – where he was a member of this university’s Committee on Investments and Social Responsibility –; and a Certificate on Real Estate Management from the EBS Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht.
