María Alejandra Frías is a senior associate in the Tax practice. She has more than eight years of professional experience advising companies and multinational groups on tax matters, tax planning, international taxation, and tax controversies. 

Her practice focuses on proceedings before the Peruvian Tax Authority (SUNAT) and the Tax Court, administrative litigation, corporate reorganizations, tax structuring of corporate transactions, and specialized tax advice for companies across a wide range of industries, including financial services, banking, mining, industrial, retail, telecommunications, infrastructure, concessions, hydrocarbons, capital markets, and international investments. 

María Alejandra has built a solid professional career at CMS Grau, where she has strengthened her expertise in tax advisory and tax litigation. Throughout her career, she has also been part of various law firms and international organizations. In addition, she served as Lead Analyst in the Tax Management area at BNY – The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation in London, providing specialized tax support for markets across Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. 

She earned her law degree with honors from the University of Piura and holds an LL.M. in International Tax Law from King’s College London, graduating with merit. She is also actively involved in academia as a university lecturer and speaker on domestic and international tax law and has authored various specialized publications.

  • Gloria Group | Advised on tax compliance, tax audits, and representation in proceedings before the Peruvian Tax Authority (SUNAT), the Tax Court, and the Judiciary for companies across various industries. 
  • Bank of New York Mellon Corporation | Advised on tax matters in more than 10 investment markets, including cross-border tax compliance, tax benefit optimization, withholding tax reclaims, and tax audits conducted by tax authorities in multiple jurisdictions. 
  • Telefónica del Perú | Advised on complex tax disputes before the Judiciary, obtaining favorable outcomes in proceedings related to SUNAT assessments totaling approximately PEN 50 million, as well as the dismissal of claims filed by the tax administration. 
  • Falabella Group | Advised on complex tax controversies and audits before SUNAT, municipalities, and the Tax Court, including disputes exceeding PEN 75 million and favorable outcomes in matters involving income tax, financial instruments, financing expenses, and municipal taxation. 
  • Nexa Group | Advised on complex tax controversies in the mining sector, including disputes related to income tax, tax stability agreements, regulatory contributions before Osinergmin, and municipal tax proceedings involving large-scale industrial assets. 
  • Breca Corporation | Advised on tax matters in due diligence processes, as well as the structuring and execution of acquisitions in the mining sector, focusing on the identification and mitigation of tax contingencies associated with investment transactions and asset acquisitions.  
  • ASBANC | Advised on the implementation of the Common Reporting Standard (CRS) and on various tax matters related to the banking and financial sectors.  
  • Backus | Advisory services in a judicial proceeding related to refunds of the Selective Consumption Tax (ISC) and the application of Andean Community regulations, in connection with a tax dispute involving a claim exceeding S/ 1,618 million.  
  • Derco | Advised on tax matters related to transactions involving non-resident entities.  
  • Grenergy | Advisory services on invested capital certification in connection with the sale of wind energy assets in Peru, for an amount exceeding USD 139 million.
