CMS develops its Debt Capital Markets Practice

21 April 2022

International law firm CMS is developing its Debt Capital Markets Practice, which operates as part of the Banking and Finance Department headed by Michał Mężykowski.

In April, Michal Śmiechowski (Counsel) joined CMS as leader of the Debt Capital Markets (DCM) Practice, alongside Przemysław Kopka (Associate), lawyers with extensive and varied experience in handling debt securities projects. Together with Artur Bednarski (Senior Associate) and Marcin Krzemien (Lawyer), they will be dealing with transactions carried out on the Polish and international debt capital markets.

I see Michał’s and Przemek’s joining as one of the key elements of the CMS business strategy. Our goal is to ensure the highest quality of legal advice in DCM projects carried out on the Polish and international debt capital markets. Strengthening the DCM practice will make our Banking and Finance Department – made up of over 40 lawyers – one of the biggest legal teams on the market”, says Michał Mężykowski, CMS partner and head of the Banking and Finance team in Poland.

Michał has over 15 years’ experience in debt capital markets transactions. He specialises in issues related to debt securities on the Polish and international capital markets. He advises both issuers and banks, as well as other financial institutions organising debt securities issues. His experience covers financing for infrastructure projects such as airports, railways, trams, water supply and wastewater treatment systems, as well as in the oil and gas, energy and heating sectors. Michał also advises clients on regulatory matters related to debt instruments and debt financing. In 2012-2013, Michał was seconded to the EIB’s headquarters in Luxembourg, where he advised, among other things, on financing granted to companies wholly or partially owned by the Polish State Treasury or local government authorities. International law rankings, including Chambers Europe, Chambers Global and IFLR1000, recommend him as a leading lawyer in the field of debt capital markets. Before joining CMS, Michał worked, amongst others, with  law firms Gide Loyrette Nouel, Dentons, and Clifford Chance.

Przemysław Kopka is an attorney-at-law who specialises in capital markets law, with a particular emphasis on debt capital markets. He advises borrowers and lenders in financing and restructuring transactions, as well as issuers and financial institutions in establishing debt issuance programmes, issuing particular series and establishing collaterals. He has experience in financing transactions for infrastructure projects, including airports, railways and trams. He also advises on regulatory issues related to the capital markets. Before joining CMS, he worked with, among others, the Warsaw office of law firm Gide Loyrette Nouel, as well as Jonak & Partners.
