CMS number one in Polish arbitration competition

12/05/2015

A team from CMS has taken first place in the national Lewiatan Arbitration Competition. The team, made up of Julia Dyras, Philip Grycewicz, Mariusz Minkiewicz and Alexander Wozniak, defeated approx. 40 teams from across Poland. Lawyers from CMS also won second place in the best pleading category.

The national Lewiatan Arbitration Competition moot court, designed for trainee lawyers and legal advisors, is based on a fictitious arbitration dispute. It is organised by the Lewiatan Confederation Court of Arbitration – an institution of international and regional renown which aims at the swift resolution of commercial disputes.

This year participants in the competition represented a client in a dispute between companies operating in the energy sector. The first – written – stage required the creation of pleadings. The second stage traditionally involves participating in hearings in front of a 3-person adjudication panel, composed of experienced practitioners.

CMS has one of the largest and most experienced specialist litigation and arbitration teams in Poland. Led by attorney Margaret Surdek, the team represents clients in domestic and international commercial arbitration proceedings and advises foreign investors in arbitration disputes on the basis of agreements on the mutual protection of investments.
